2017 marks the passage of 20 years since the most massive protests in the Romanian penitentiary system, in which 3,000 imprisoned people refused food and challenged the conditions of detention. Today the claims are similar, and among the most ECHR convictions in Romania there is constantly the issue of detention conditions. At the beginning of the year, with the debate on corruption, the problems of the penitentiary system have again become a topical issue serving political interests and furthering the taboo about life behind bars for the "civil society". Today more than 23,000 people are locked in one of the 44 prisons in Romania. Ţuhaus is an invitation to reflect on how criminalization, guilt and punishment are understood and operated by contemporary society.
